Islambad Buildings safety
ISLAMABAD: Standardisation and quality control of building materials are vital to avoid incidents like the recent bridge collapse in Karachi, said State Minister State and Planning Commission’s Deputy Chairman Dr Muhammad Akram Shiekh here on Tuesday.

He was addressing a seminar on “Building Code of Pakistan”, a document prepared by the Housing and Works Ministry in collaboration with the National Housing Authority (NHA) and National Engineering Services Pakistan Limited (NESPAK) to standardise the structure of buildings built in their country.

A representative read the housing minister’s message, which said after the October 8, 2005 earthquake, in which more than 70,000 people were died, the government realised that implementation of building code according to the international standards was an imperative to avoid such losses of human lives. He said to address this issue, a Pakistan specific standard building code had been developed focusing on a countrywide awareness campaigns about earthquake disaster, implementation of best available techniques to build earthquake resistant buildings and adoption of all latest technologies. The speakers highlighted the importance of a standard building code in an underdeveloped country like Pakistan and the long-term benefits once the code is implemented.

During the question-answer session, participants expressed their concerns over the implementation of the code. They were keen to know the building code implementation mechanism. They also expressed their concern over the standardisation and quality control issues. An engineer criticising the unavailability of standard and quality building materials in the market said the country had hundred years old cement plants, producing sub-standard cement. He said in addition to developing the building codes, availability of quality material was essential to build durable buildings in the country. Pest treatment was also recommended to include in the building code by a participant as termite could turn a building upside down. staff report
