CDWP approves 32 development projects
The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) here on Saturday approved 32 development projects costing Rs. 77 billion including a foreign aid component of Rs. 23.5 billion. The CDWP meeting was held here under the chairmanship of Deputy Chairman Planning Commission / Minister of State, Dr.Muhammad Akram Sheikh.

Later briefing the newsmen, the Spokesman of Planning Commission Asif Sheikh said that this was the last meeting of the CDWP for the financial year 2006-07.

He said that in the earlier meetings of CDWP which were held every month, 391 projects costing Rs. 415.6 billion were approved.

Syed Asif Sheikh said that during the current financial year Rs.245.5 billion development funds under Public Sector Development Programme have been released which is 98 percent of the total allocation.


Highlighting the allocations, he said that out of total 32 development projects approved by the CDWP today, he said 13 projects were related to infrastructure costing Rs.51.8 billion with foreign aid component of Rs.10.1 billion.

He said that Social sectors 13 projects worth Rs.20.0 billion including foreign aid component of Rs.12.1 billion were also approved by the CDWP.

Similarly, he said that in other sectors 6 projects costing Rs.5.2 billion including foreign aid component of 1.3 billion were also approved by the CDWP.

Spokesman Planning Commission Syed Asif Sheikh highlighting the locations of the projects said that for Punjab province 10 projects at a cost of Rs. 0.6 billion, Sindh 1 project costing Rs. 0.1 billion, NWFP 1 project at a cost of Rs. 0.1 billion, Balochistan 3 projects costing Rs. 26.6 billion, for the Northern Areas 3 project costing Rs.0.4 billion and for AJK one project costing Rs.0.3 billion, for FATA 2 projects costing Rs.0.1 billion and for all over the country 11 projects costing Rs. 28.7 billion were also approved by the CDWP.

Syed Asif Sheikh said that out of 32 projects, cost of 9 projects is over Rs. 500 million and the cost of these projects is Rs. 72.4 billion which will be placed before the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval.

He further said that of the 32 projects, 11 projects have been revised and their net addition is Rs. 22.2 billion (from Rs. 17.4 billion to Rs. 39.6 billion).

Syed Asif Sheikh said that the total cost of the approved 32 projects is Rs. 59.6 billion.

He said that CDWP has also recommended that the land owned by one government department purchased from government funds, if not in use for the purpose for which it was purchased, if required by the another government department, should be transferred to be used for other development projects.

He however said that land acquired from the provinces will be given compensation.

Spokesman Planning Commission, Syed Asif Sheikh said that CDWP also approved import of 100 MW power from Iran for Gwadar , Makran and Turbat at a cost of Rs. 3.7 billion.

He added that for the upgradation and additional works for Expo center Lahore the CDWP approved Rs. 2970.000 million.

He added that for the project of Oceanographic Research Vessel for Coaster waters Rs. 1300.000 million were also approved.

The Spokesman Planning Commission said that for Human Resource Development Initiative HRDIMS leading to Ph.D programmes of Faculty development for UESTPS-Pkase-1 the CDWP approver Rs. 13485 million.

He added that for the establishment of urban clinics in major urban areas of Pakistan the CDWP approved Rs.4302.414 million.

He said that for Rural telecommunication and E-services development projects Rs.8180.710 million were also approved by the CDWP.

The CDWP also approved Rs. 3596.929 million for land acquisition of Faisalabad -Khanewal Motorway M-4 (184 Km) Rs. 3596.929 million were also approved.

He added that CDWP also approved Rs. 12000 million for the construction of bridge over river Sutlej connecting Pak Pattan with Mincinabad including approach road and training works the CDWP approved Rs. 12000 million.

Replying to a question , he said that the Planning Commission most of the senior management are economists with Phd degrees and the members representing diversified groups to run the organization on professional lines.

Regarding the resignation of Dr.Nadeem ul Haq Vice Chancellor of PIDE , he said that he has resigned from the post on his own.
